Maybe
it was time to remind Marcus just how much he owed him.
All those years ago that bastard Daley was plotting
to remove Marcus from his seat of power. Daley thought
he had Andy totally under his control. Christ, he even
wanted him to finish the bugger off.

“He
thinks you’re chicken. He’ll let you get
close, never suspect. Man – that will be your
chance. Knife the greedy bastard! Paul Daley will reign
supreme. Don’t worry – plenty perks as my
new sidekick.”

Crap!
That’s what stuck in Andy’s craw. Everyone
thought he had no guts. Hell, you don’t have to
go around killing to prove yourself, do you?

“I’ll
show him there are other ways to shaft losers.”

With
those thoughts still gnawing inside his head he’d
decided to warn Marcus. Daley copped it. Hell, what
did one more corpse matter anyway? The crag had been
the final resting place for many an unfortunate sod.
Marcus viewed Andy in a different light after that.
Could he ever double-cross him, he wondered. So began
the love/hate relationship.

Why
did everyone want to use him? David Martin had come
on the scene not long after that. He’d sniffed
Andy out after hearing tales about the park.

“Just
the guy to get me the info I need. There’s a drugs
ring, we know, but we think the money’s funding
a diamond smuggling racket. Bigger names have to be
involved. Get out while you still can. I can always
find work for someone like you. These guys will spit
you out eventually.”

It had
seemed a dream opportunity. Not one to be tied down
he’d allowed himself to be talked into it.

Looking
back made him feel bitter and resentful. He had to deal
with the present. He knew Marcus would never shop Leyland
– blood thicker than water and all that bloody
crap – but surely he could buy him more time.
His wife was dead. David was dead. He couldn’t
even contemplate Anna being added to the list. He was
still floundering in the dark. He’d said he’d
get the money. What bloody money?

Hell,
he was wary of Marcus but anger and desperation replaced
fear. He grabbed hold of Marcus’s collar, dragged
him out of the pew and simultaneously spun him round
and slammed him against the stone wall. He leaned forward
and hissed,

“This
is payback time! Your brother’s a madman and he’s
got my daughter. Get me more time … Find out what
he’s talking about….!”

Trouble
was, did Leyland tell Marcus about Heather?
